“I’m up at midnight, I’m dippin’ off in my Nizzikes
A gun and a metal pizzipe, a knizzife is to my rizzight
I’m lurkin’ servin’ on pussies who lack a purpose
I’ve got ‘em filled up with frizzight like Mizzike is you all rizzight?
I’m lookin’ lurkin’ on bitches twerkin’ for service
The bitches bag is a Birkin, I’m yellin’ screamin’ and cursin’
I’m putting pistols in faces at random places like
Bitch give it up or stand adjacent to Satan”

Run The Jewels, consisting of New York based rapper and producer El-P and Atlanta based rapper and madman Killer Mike. The former the boss of one of the most influential indie rap labels during the early 2000s paired together with a long time dirty south icon and OutKast collaborator. Turn back the clock ten years and it would’ve been hard to find a more unlikely combo. Yet, here we are, and this is definitely the most interesting hip-hop collaboration to pop up in a very long time. The duo really manages to bring out the absolute best out of each other, and neither rapper has ever sounded as good as they do on RTJ2. The move from mixtape to full album format has done wonders. This is extremely polished revivalist rap, so super rugged and raw that it feels like you’ve been brought back to the golden era of rap during the first half of the 90’s. The first verses from both rappers on opening track Jeopardy (see Killer Mike’s lines above) sets an insane standard that is kept throughout the whole record. It’s aggressive, and stupid, brilliant, and always delivered some sort of sense of self irony. This goes everything from the raging “Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)”, suitable enough featuring Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine, to the sexually explicit Lova Again (Akinyele Back) featuring Gangsta Boo. Supposedly the work with RTJ3 has already begun, and I can’t wait. Before that though we’ll be treated to Meow The Jewels, a remix album featuring nothing but cat sounds. Yup.
