17. Tinashe – Aquarius

“Aquarius” by Tinashe

Country: US
Release date: 3 October 2014
Label: RCA Records

“If we pretend that I’m happy when I’m really not
Pretend that I give you everything I got
Pretend that I’m there when I ain’t there
Pretend that I care when I don’t care
Once upon a time I did”

Drawing inspiration from both contemporaries like Drake and past heroines like Aaliyah, Tinashe delivers the most interesting R&B debut in ages. This is a full fledged album with both sweaty club bangers and romantic ballads, but the perhaps most interesting parts are what you find between the potential radio hits. There’s a very personal depth to it, letting out a glimpse of something darker beneath the polished surface. This is Tinashe’s very own vision. There’s also quite an impressive line up of guest appearances, and I especially like A$AP Rocky playing the role of the douche bag boyfriend on the excellent “Pretend” (quoted above).
